Compounds and Elements

What is the difference between a chemical symbol and a chemical formula?

28 comments:

  1. A chemical symbol is what represents an element like gold is Au. A chemical formula is mass divided by volume.

  2. a chemical symbol is the letter(s) that abbreviate the element;

    a chemical formula is what elements make up a compound;

  3. The (chemical) formula is the way the chemical (substance) is written in another form besides a chemical symbol, which is showing the chemical formula , the atomic mass, and the atomic number.

  4. A chemical formula is the letters and numbers that represent an element like Fe2O3 means there are 2 Iron atoms and 3 Oxygen atoms. A chemical symbol is the mass devided by the volume of the element.

  5. A chemical symbol is a symbol using letters and a chemical formula is as adair said its atomic # and atomic mass.

  6. a chemical symbol is a chemical just like an abreviation

  7. and a chemical formula is a experiment with chemicals

  8. A compound is when two or more elements are chemicaly together

  9. A chemical symbol is a abbreviations like Grace said. For example, oxygen is O, Hydrogen is H, and Neon is Ne. A chemical formula shows how many atoms are in a molecule or compound.

  10. a chemical symbol is like h means hydrogen, an a chemical formula is what makes that element.

  11. The difference between a chemical symbol and a chemical formula is that a chemical symbol is a symbol with the element and a number beside the number of atoms and a chemical formula is a formula that helps you figure out what the mass and volume is of the element.

  12. Chemical symbol: One or two letters that are a short way to tell what element you are talking about. Ex:

    lead= Pb
    Potassium=K

    Chemical formula: The formula that tells what elements are in a molecule.
    Ex:

    KOH2

  16. You know that compounds could be H2O, C02, and they rest of those CRAZY compounds.

  17. A chemical symbol is the letters that make up a element

    A chemical formula are the letters that make up a compound as in (H2O)

  18. A element has only 1 type of atom, also nothing can comdine and make that element

  19. Elements are that pure substance that if chemicaly combined form an compound. So try NOT to mix to elements that when mixed might go BOOM!!

  21. elements are one or more atoms that are the same.

  22. Mixtures contain more than 2 or more kinds of elements or compounds that are not chemically COMBINED!!

  23. Elements can't be rearranged. Elements can not be broken down. Some elements are gold, oxygen, and neon. Mixtures are made of more than one thing. Some mixtures are juice, table salt, and air. Compounds have different properties than the substances its made up of.

  24. An element only contains one type of atom and can only be found on the periodic table. Some examples are hydrogen, helium, carbon, nitrogen, iron, calcium and aluminum. An compound contains 2 or more kinds of atoms chemically combined. Some examples water, carbon, dioxide, sugar and salt.

  25. compounds are two or more types of atoms and elements have one type of atom.

  26. Knock knock (Who is there?) Elements! (Elements who?) Elements are here to combine to form a compound!

  27. Sorry that goes in the next category.

  28. A chemical symbol is one or two letters that represent an element. the first letter is always capitalized, and if there is a second letter, it is not capitalized. (Ex: Carbon-C, Gold-Au) A chemical formula is when you are writing a compound of mixture using chemical symbols. If you were writing a chemical formula for a compound, you would write each one next to each other with no spaces. however many atoms there are of each element, you put that number in a subscript after the chemical symbol of that element.
